I made a video about the controversial Rust website redesign from 2018 on what in my opinion the Rust team did right, what the community didn't understand, and how once again Mozilla shows that it's just a mediocre big tech company. invidious.snopyta.org/23JCY0SQGIA

As a TL;DR: 1. The website went from targeting devs, to targeting decision-makers. Reasonable choice by the Rust team and good execution content-wise (I have no opinions on the grafical design). Rust won developers and now it was aiming higher. Good problem to have.

2. The community failed to understand that the website was now being used to target a different crowd and got riled up when it felt excluded from the development process. Minor issues piled up and, combined with a sentiment of distrust, madness ensued.

3. I suspect that the product launch that included the new website was orchestrated by a marketing manager in Mozilla and this also added to the madness, burning out the individual contributors in the company, and resulting in a bland & not fully honest retrospective blog post.
