I became a manager a few months ago and I love it! But our org also has a great IC path. I'd never want a manager who became one just because there was no where else to promote to -- it's a different skill set than dev.

@zapier is a big believer in creating long-term paths for ICs. I’m currently a Staff Data Scientist and have the opportunity to work hard, grow and achieve Principal / Distinguished Engineer. We’re hiring, too, if folks are looking for something new. zapier.com/jobs/#job-opening…

I’ve managed developers before and would like to again... one day πŸ™‚ In my next role I’d like to be an IC again. Alternating between the roles leads to some interesting perspectives and brings a lot of value to teams.

I currently lead teams! My recommendation for soft skills: think often about what roles and responsibilities are needed for a project and company to be successful. Who's responsible? for what? are they aware of it? are they fulfilling it? The answer to those are critical

Many developers could benefit from taking a career break to try running a small business

1. No 2. Sort of, got to the end of it "lead/staff/principle engineer" 3. A specialization beyond "software developer" called @IndieHackers 😁(add skills like writing, marketing, design)

I like to help and train staff, I was a manager before but then I felt it was just being in meetings or spending all day on the phone. I like programming and I wouldn't give it up. With the pandemic I think it is better to be independent. Many people lost their jobs
