Working with Smaller Communities
A while back I participated in a podcast for indiemedia.club talking about the do’s and don'ts of launching communities, how to develop a paid membership site, and bonus tips. You can find it here...

The Helpful / Solved Score (and comparing support channels)
Questions like “was this answer helpful?” or “did this answer solve your problem?” are a powerful means of evaluating the success of many community programs.

When people are discussing whether their community should be private (or on a platform which is bad for search), I don't think they truly appreciate the difference it makes.
i.e. "are you ok with having 70% to 80% fewer people as a result of this decision?"
Examining some client data and see this recurring pattern.
After about 8 to 12 months, the majority of visitors come via search.
This peaks quickly and then hovers at the same level indefinitely.

It's still proving devilishly hard to predict which communities will survive and thrive.
But it seems specific dynamics within communities are more important than specific tools.

The Wrong Way To Pick A Community Platform
If you’re trying to decide between different platforms in different categories, you have a strategy problem. This is a terrible way to build community!
