My first MLK Day as a *professional* I went into work, as an associate at Debevoise and Plimpton. I would have liked to take the day off, but we had work. Around the office that day, I noticed that most of the black people were also at work that day (there weren't many of us)...

Later in the day, I stopped by the office of one Black woman older associate I was friendly with. I wryly said "hell of a 'holiday' for us." She said that she tried to work *every* MLK day. She told me:...

"The way I look at it, people fought so I'd have the opportunity to work at a place like this. Working on this day, of all days, is a way I can honor that." What I do is objectively unimportant. But going on @cspanwj to fight with Republicans today, of all days, was a privilege.

I just think it's messed up most of us still get Columbus day but not MLK. The holidays we recognize show what we value most.

I don’t think this is universal. I haven’t gotten Columbus Day (indigenous peoples day, really) I’m forever, but I take off every single MLK day, it should be a “real” holiday not a bank holiday.

Nothing keeps you grounded like a CSPAN call-in hour. Grounded to what I'm not quite sure but I never miss an Elie hour: c-span.org/video/?508025-3/w…

Thanks for this. I will never complain about working on MLK Day again. Perspective is everything.

They also serve who stand and wait. There is more than one way to serve the causes and people we believe it.
